You spent months planning this trip. You booked everything, counted down the days, and pictured turquoise water, sunshine, and beach days worth every penny. Maybe you dreamed of snorkeling with colorful fish, paddleboarding at sunset, or just floating in the ocean with your eyes closed.

Less than an hour from almost anywhere in the Riviera Maya, there’s a completely different world. No sargassum or waves. The water is so clear you can see fish ten meters below, and sunbeams shine through the jungle canopy, lighting up the water in ways no photograph fully captures. This is the world of cenotes, and it only exists here.
We’ll explain what’s happening with sargassum, what’s being done, and, most importantly, how cenote diving in the Riviera Maya can turn a disrupted trip into an unforgettable experience.

What Is Sargassum and
Why Does It Smell Like That?

Sargassum is a free-floating marine algae that has drifted in the open Atlantic for millions of years. Offshore, it functions as a miniature ecosystem sheltering juvenile sea turtles, fish larvae, and hundreds of species of small invertebrates.
 
The problem is that in recent years, it has been reaching Caribbean beaches in volumes never seen before. When it piles up and starts to decompose, it releases hydrogen sulfide: a gas with a sharp, unmistakable smell that fills the air and ruins that first deep breath at the beach.

Why Is So Much Sargassum
Reaching the Riviera Maya?

Three main factors drive the crisis: warmer oceans from climate change, shifts in Atlantic currents, and elevated nutrient levels of nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural runoff in the Amazon and Mississippi basins that enter the sea and fuel algal growth.
 
The result is a sargassum season that usually begins in April and continues through September, though in recent years it has started earlier or lasted later into the year. This influx is not permanent, but it currently exceeds the capacity of the available solutions.
 
So what actions are underway to address this challenge?

What Is Being Done
to Fight It?

Governments, hotels, municipalities, and local communities are working on multiple fronts every day:
 
  1. Floating barriers are installed offshore to intercept sargassum before it reaches the beach.
  2. Daily beach-cleaning crews use machinery and contracted local labor.
  3. Specialized collection vessels that gather sargassum offshore, where volumes are manageable
  4. Satellite early-warning systems that predict arrivals weeks in advance so crews can prepare
 
The scale of the response is significant. In Cancún, a single day can mobilize up to 80 workers with tractors and mechanical sweepers. In Playa del Carmen, more than 150 ZOFEMAT workers operate with Navy support, with between 200 and 250 people working simultaneously in a single municipality. These workers are now known as sargaceros, and in 2026, the Playa del Carmen City Council issued a public call to hire more of them. As solutions grow, new opportunities are emerging in the region.

Becoming a Resource

What’s a crisis today is becoming an industry. Entrepreneurs and researchers across Mexico are finding new uses for harvested sargassum:
 
  • Eco-friendly footwear: Mexican company Renovare Ocean (@renovare.r · renovareco.com) makes shoes with soles from compacted sargassum and uppers from recycled PET. Ten percent of every sale goes to coastal cleanups.
  • Disposable tableware: In April 2026, the Quintana Roo hotel and restaurant sector launched Caribe Circular, an alliance producing single-use utensils made with 30% sargassum, targeting 1,180 hotels and 5,900 restaurants by 2028.
  • Bioplastics, biochar, and bioenergy are parallel development lines within the same program.
  • Cosmetic and pharmaceutical active ingredients derived from sargassum compounds.
 
The processing infrastructure is still being built. But Yucatan is visibly learning to turn its biggest headache into an opportunity. With these efforts, visitors are discovering the unique appeal of cenotes compared to traditional beach diving.

You can dive in the ocean in Thailand, Greece, or Miami. The ocean is everywhere. But cenotes like the ones on the Yucatan Peninsula don’t exist anywhere else in the world in this form, on this scale, or with this kind of easy access.

What It Actually Feels Like:
Inside a Cenote

Close your eyes and picture this.
 
You arrive along a dirt road in the middle of the jungle. The tree canopy closes overhead. The heat drops. You look over a stone edge into an opening in the earth, roots hanging from above, blue-green water below, unlike anything you’ve seen outside a photograph.
 
You get in. The water is fresh, clean, and at 24-25°C year-round, with no salt and no waves. The silence is almost total. The visibility feels unreal: white limestone, submerged stalactite formations that took hundreds of thousands of years to build when the caves were still dry, small freshwater fish drifting through the shadows below you.

Best Time to Visit Cenotes
in the Riviera Maya

The short answer: any time of year. That’s one of the cenotes’ defining advantages.
 
Water temperature holds at a constant 24–25°C regardless of season. Visibility stays above 30 meters year-round. There is no sargassum season, no storm season, and no “bad month” to visit underground. If anything, the April-to-September window when sargassum is at its worst on the beach is the best possible time to redirect your itinerary toward the jungle and cenotes.
 
Morning light (roughly 9 am–noon) produces the most dramatic sunbeam effects inside open cenotes. For semi-open and cave environments, light conditions are consistent throughout the day. Next, discover how your choice of accommodations can make your jungle adventure even more memorable.

Staying in the Jungle: A Completely Different Trip

If you go one step further and change not just your beach days but where you stay, your trip transforms entirely. The cenote corridor between Playa del Carmen and Tulum is full of boutique ecolodges, Airbnbs, and jungle hotels featured in top travel magazines for good reason.
 
Many have their own private cenote. You wake up, walk a hundred meters through the trees, and get into the water before breakfast when the light is perfect, and no one else is around. Then you eat: local fruit, fresh tortillas, café de olla.
 
At sunrise, hundreds of bird species start before anything else. When afternoon fades, howler monkeys call from the treetops. At night, with no light pollution from beach resorts, the sky fills with stars. Everything smells like wet earth and living plants.
Sargassum doesn’t reach here. It isn’t even a factor.
 
And when night falls, the Riviera Maya changes again. Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum all offer world-class nightlife from the clubs of Cancún’s Hotel Zone to beach clubs with live music in Playa del Carmen, to boutique bars and jungle parties in Tulum that have given this region a global reputation for electronic music. Cenote days and party nights, you don’t have to choose between them.

Is cenote diving safe for beginners?
Yes. Open cenotes are suitable for certified Open Water divers with solid buoyancy control. Semi-open and cavern environments require a Cavern Diver certification. Full cave diving requires Cave Diver certification. If you’re new to diving, our instructors can assess your level and recommend the right experience before you get in the water.
To enter the cave zone (beyond natural light), you need a recognized Cave Diver certification from PADI, TDI, NSS-CDS, or equivalent. For the cavern zone (within natural light, within 40 meters of the entrance), a Cavern Diver certification is required. We offer both courses on-site.
It varies by cenote. Open cenotes typically range from 5 to 20 meters in depth. Cenotes connected to Sistema Sac Actun can reach 30+ meters in certain passages, though most guided recreational dives stay well within Open Water depth limits. We’ll brief you on the specific profile before every dive.
Most cenotes along the Riviera Maya corridor are 30–60 minutes from the coast by car or taxi. We can arrange transport from your hotel as part of any tour. If you’re driving yourself, Highway 307 runs parallel to the coast and gives you access to the main cenote zones.
Not at all. Cenotes are fed by freshwater aquifers deep underground, completely isolated from the ocean. Sargassum is a saltwater algae and has no presence in cenote systems whatsoever.
