Why train with Divers UnderGround

Technical leadership is not about being the strongest diver in the group; it is about executing a clean system under real conditions.

We train Technical Divemaster candidates through a structured approach: clear objectives, repeatable checklists, scenario-driven supervision, and debriefings that lead to better decisions on the next dive.

You will work with instructors and teams who operate year-round in the Riviera Maya, bringing practical procedures into every session. The goal is simple: to develop leaders who keep teams safe, organized, and compliant without drama, improvisation, or shortcuts.

What is a TDI Technical Divemaster?

A TDI Technical Divemaster is a professional-level technical diving leader trained to assist active TDI Instructors and supervise certified technical divers in open-water technical diving activities, within the limits of their own training and experience.
This course is not about collecting another card. It is about learning how to think, plan, brief, manage, and lead with the discipline expected in technical diving.
This course is for certified technical divers who are ready to move from personal performance into leadership.
It is a strong fit if you want to:
  • Lead certified technical divers.
  • Assist instructors during approved technical diving courses.
  • Strengthen your dive planning and team-management skills.
  • Build professional-level judgment in technical diving environments.
  • Continue developing toward instructor-level training.
If you already have technical diving experience and want to become more useful to a team, this is the next serious step.
Yes. Divers UnderGround offers TDI Technical Divemaster training in Playa del Carmen, giving you access to technical diving instruction in one of the most active diving regions in the Riviera Maya.
Training in Playa del Carmen allows candidates to develop leadership skills in real diving conditions while working with instructors who operate in the area year-round.
To begin the TDI Technical Divemaster course, candidates must be at least 18 years old, hold an SDI Divemaster certification, have current first aid and oxygen provider training, provide a current medical examination, show proof of at least 50 logged dives, and already be certified as a technical diver.
Because this is a professional-level technical diving course, we also look for maturity, consistency, preparation, and the ability to accept feedback.
Yes. For this TDI Technical Divemaster prerequisite, candidates must be certified as an SDI Divemaster. Equivalent divemaster ratings from other agencies are not accepted for this specific prerequisite.
If you are already a divemaster with another agency, contact us, and we can help you understand the correct pathway before applying.
The TDI Technical Divemaster course requires four open-water dives with a minimum accumulated bottom time of 100 minutes.
These are not “just more dives.” They are leadership-performance dives where your planning, preparation, control, briefings, debriefings, and decision-making are evaluated.
TDI requires a minimum of 10 classroom and briefing hours, and the course structure may be adjusted based on the number of students and their skill level.
At Divers UnderGround, the schedule is built around readiness, not rushing. The goal is to produce a capable technical dive leader, not simply complete the minimum time.
You will develop the leadership skills needed to supervise certified technical divers and support technical diving activities. Training includes knowledge development in recreational dive leadership, diving physics, diving physiology, equipment, personal dive skills, and professional skills.
You will also practice the real-world parts of leadership: preparing dives, giving briefings, controlling the team, managing the plan, debriefing performance, and making sound decisions under pressure.
No. The TDI Technical Divemaster program does not cover overhead environments, except for advanced wreck.
This course focuses on leading certified technical divers in open-water technical diving activities similar to your prior training and within your experience level.
After successful completion, graduates may assist an active TDI Instructor during approved diving courses when the activities are similar to their prior training. Graduates may also supervise and conduct dives for certified technical divers, provided the activities are similar to their prior training.
In simple terms: this certification helps you step into a professional leadership role, but it does not remove the limits of your own training, judgment, or experience.
You must demonstrate preparation, planning, and control in dive management and technical diving activities. You must also give at least two briefings or debriefings, complete the required water work, pass the written examination for the highest technical diver rating held, and demonstrate mature judgment in dive planning and execution.
The standard is not “good enough to get through the dive.” The standard is divemaster-quality performance in leadership-level equipment.
Yes. You are expected to have the required equipment for the technical diving activity you are participating in. Minimum equipment includes core diving equipment such as a mask, fins, a BCD, a regulator, an alternate air source, a weight system, a personal dive computer, exposure protection, a cylinder, a compass, a knife/rescue signal, and any additional equipment required for the specific technical diving activity.
Before the course, we will review your equipment configuration so you arrive prepared.
Yes, the TDI Technical Divemaster course is a professional-level program. You are expected to show technical diving competence, leadership-level control, mature judgment, and the ability to manage dives in a structured way.
This is the right course if you want a serious evaluation of your readiness to lead, not an easy certification.
