Guided DPV Cave Dives

Explore even further into the veins of the Earth Guided by

the Divers UnderGround team

Experience the cenotes of the Riviera Maya with guided DPV cave dives designed for qualified cave divers who want to explore further with precision, control, and professional local support.

A Diver Propulsion Vehicle changes the way a cave dive feels. It can open longer routes, reduce swimming effort, and create access to sections of the cave that require more advanced planning. But DPV cave diving also demands maturity, conservative decision-making, excellent buoyancy, clear team procedures, and respect for the overhead environment.

At Divers UnderGround, our guided DPV cave dives are built around safety, preparation, and local cave knowledge. We help certified, experienced cave DPV divers plan and enjoy high-quality scooter dives in cenotes near Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Mexico.

Overview: Guided DPV Cave Dives

Throughout the dives, you’ll be accompanied by a cave instructor with over 18 years of diving and exploration in the caves of the Riviera Maya. This expertise helps us suggest scooter routes tailored to your certification level, DPV background, and personal diving goals.

Each dive is carefully planned and conducted as a technical team dive in an overhead environment. Our goal isn’t simply to cover distance, but to do so with control, situational awareness, responsible gas management, clear communication, and the utmost respect for the cave system.

For this experience, we use high-performance, long-range DPVs designed specifically for extensive cave systems. Our scooters provide over 8 hours of burn time at medium-high speed, are carefully trimmed and neutrally buoyant in fresh water, and enable stable, efficient, and comfortable navigation.

Our DPVs also feature cruise control and double handles, making them comfortable to operate with either hand during long dives. An app is available to monitor battery levels before and after the dives for analysis.

Why Choose Divers UnderGround for Guided DPV Cave Dives?

The Riviera Maya is home to some of the world’s most spectacular and intricate underwater cave systems. Our instructors and instructor trainers at Divers UnderGround have over 18 years of experience exploring and teaching in these unique environments. This depth of knowledge allows us to personalize every route to your certification, experience, comfort level, DPV setup, and individual goals.

Each dive is approached with careful planning and an unwavering commitment to safety. We assess the site, build a collaborative team plan, and account for distance, dive time, gas management, equipment configuration, procedures, and contingencies. DPV cave diving is about much more than simply using a scooter; it’s about sound judgment, precise control, and thoughtful route planning.

We rely on top-tier, high-performance scooters, chosen for their ability to deliver a safe, comfortable, and dependable experience during longer dives, always prioritizing control and safety.

As a 5 Star TDI Dive Center and Professional Development Facility, Divers UnderGround trains and certifies qualified cave divers through TDI Cave DPV courses. We also guide certified Cave DPV divers, or divers with equivalent documented overhead DPV experience, through advanced DPV cave dives in the Riviera Maya. Guided DPV cave diving is not a substitute for training; divers who are not already qualified for overhead scooter diving should contact us about the appropriate training pathway before booking a guided dive.

What certifications are required to join a guided DPV cave dive with Divers UnderGround?

Guided DPV cave dives at Divers UnderGround require two certifications: a Full Cave Diver certification and a Cave DPV Diver certification. Both are mandatory. Full Cave certification alone is not sufficient for DPV cave diving in an overhead environment. This distinction is non-negotiable: adding a scooter to a cave dive introduces planning, equipment, and emergency management considerations that require specific, verified training.
No. Guided DPV cave dives in Playa del Carmen with Divers UnderGround are not available to Full Cave divers who have not completed Cave DPV training. If you’re a certified Full Cave diver interested in cave scooter diving, the next appropriate step is enrolling in the TDI Cave DPV course before booking guided DPV dives. Divers UnderGround offers this training. Contact us to discuss the course, then plan your guided dive days.
These are three separate activities with distinct certification requirements. Recreational cenote diving and cavern diving take place in the daylight zone and do not require overhead certification to be guided by a local dive professional. Guided cave diving requires Full Cave certification and takes place fully in the overhead environment. DPV cave diving requires both Full Cave and Cave DPV certifications and introduces scooters, which add range, complexity, gas-planning considerations, and equipment-specific contingencies. A guide cannot substitute for any of these certifications, regardless of the diver’s experience in other underwater environments.
Beyond certification, Divers UnderGround evaluates recent cave-diving activity, familiarity with DPV operation in overhead environments, buoyancy and trim, equipment configuration, and equipment condition. During the pre-dive planning session, we will review certification documents, discuss your DPV background, evaluate your configuration, and collaboratively select a route and gas plan appropriate to your current readiness, not your highest certification on paper. Divers who are recently active and properly configured will have the widest range of site and route options.
Yes to both, subject to equipment standards. Sidemount cave divers are welcome, provided the configuration meets overhead-environment standards, and you have the corresponding sidemount certification and cave experience. If you plan to bring your own DPV, confirm compatibility, DPV type, and battery specifications with Divers UnderGround before your trip. If you don’t have your own scooter, high-performance long-range DPVs are included in the service. Confirm availability and specifications when booking.
Each guided cave DPV dive is planned as a technical team dive. Planning covers route selection, distance and time estimates, turn points, gas volumes appropriate to the planned dive profile, DPV battery and burn-time assessment, team roles and communication procedures, and contingency and exit strategies. The goal is a dive plan where every team member understands their role, gas management, and what to do if a scooter or other equipment fails. Specific planning details are discussed with each diver before the dive.
Site and route selection for guided DPV cave diving in the cenotes of the Riviera Maya depends on each diver’s certification level, recent experience, team configuration, gas choices, and DPV setup. Divers UnderGround has over 18 years of exploration experience in these systems and uses that local knowledge to recommend routes that match the team’s actual capabilities. Not every route is appropriate for every diver, and the guide’s site judgment is final.
A typical guided DPV cave dive day runs from approximately 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. We usually do one long dive lasting 90 to 180 minutes, depending on the route, gas volumes, team pace, and DPV burn time.
Included in the guided DPV cave dive service: transportation from Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, or Tulum; a DPV appropriate for overhead cave diving; Nitrox 32%; cenote entrance fees; and water, lunch, and snacks.
You are expected to arrive with full cave diving equipment configured for the overhead environment: primary and backup lights, reels or spools as appropriate, cutting devices, personalized line markers, dual timing, depth, and gas monitoring devices, and exposure protection suitable for the cenotes (freshwater, typically 24–25°C/75–77°F). If you plan to use your own DPV, bring it fully charged and ready for assessment during pre-dive planning. All other equipment requirements, including gas and DPV, are covered in the service, unless you prefer to use your own. Confirm specifics when booking.
To reserve a guided DPV cave dive with Divers UnderGround in Playa del Carmen, use the contact form or contact us directly via WhatsApp or email. Confirm deposit requirements, cancellation policy, and payment details directly with Divers UnderGround at the time of inquiry, as these details may vary. Reservations are confirmed only after the certification documents and experience details have been reviewed.
Send Divers UnderGround the following before booking: copies of your Full Cave and Cave DPV certifications (or equivalent overhead DPV documentation), a summary of your recent cave diving and DPV diving activity, your equipment configuration (backmount or sidemount, stage, scooter type if you have your own), your preferred dates, and your specific goals. This allows the team to recommend an appropriate route, confirm readiness, and plan an accurate pre-dive briefing. The more specific your information, the better the planning conversation.
